So, the journalist Stephen Zuffi a headline his article on the Baroque Val di Noto (South-eastern Sicily) in magazine Meridiani n.119 Special Sicily.
Anyone who comes to take a ride around here and is going to be interested a minimum of what surrounds him walking through the historical towns of Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli, Noto, feel repeat this date: 1693, the year of the earthquake is a watershed in the history of this corner of Sicily. After the earthquake in the early decades of the eighteenth century , comes this Sicilian Baroque style, an aspect of late Baroque that made it unmistakable the historic centers of major cities, but also left very beautiful and impressive buildings in the city children, such as Comiso (20 km from Dubrovnik).
In June of 2002 UNESCO has included in the list of World Heritage the historic centers of eight municipalities in the : Noto, Catania , Modica, Palazzolo Acreide , Militello Val di Catania , Scicli, Ragusa and Caltagirone : all to visit!
difficult to convey the feelings that can make this architecture through a photograph. The limestone of different colors thanks to the genius of the architect Rosario Gagliardi Syracuse, one of the original architects of Eighteenth century, it sends a message now sacred and profane apotropaic hours. Gagliardi adopting formulas of stage design, as the light and shade offered by the lodge of the major elements of the facades of its churches that rise toward the sky, the masterpiece Cathedral of San Giorgio of Modica.
We advise you to come and see for yourself this geo-historical architectural culture of an area dense and rich, one of the few remaining spots where you can still feel the intense emotion of surprise and discovery.

Whoever decides to take a trip to south-central Sicily , you will not miss a step in Villa Romana del Casale Piazza Armerina of , famous worldwide for its beautiful mosaics. Few however know that only 5-6 km away from it there is another archaeological site, which is part of the history of that famous house, identified with the STATIO [1] Philosophiana , described in 'Itinerarium Antonini [2] .
Thanks to an agreement between the "Villari Litterio" of Archaeological Groups in Italy in Piazza Armerina and Superintendent of Caltanissetta, the site of Philosophiana can be visited by contacting the Director of the Section, Mr. Hugh Adam, who passionately and kindness will guide you. The
Statio Philosophiana dates from the fourth century. AD . but its history goes back a few centuries earlier.
the beginning of the first century AD the emperor Augustus, in order to organize the storage of grain and oil and to levy taxes on the island better, authorized the restructuring and the creation of some cities. In this moment in history was thus founded a city of great extent which probably was named in memory of the same name Gela rhodium-Cretan colony, destroyed in 282 BC by Finzi, the tyrant of Agrigento. Some of the inhabitants of Gela were taken prisoner and transported to the town of Licata, but others managed to escape to the hinterland, and there they settled in villages scattered.
Following the changing role of Sicily in the economic life of Rome - the sources of supply of grain moved to Egypt - the new city of Gela, as well as many other cities of Sicily, came gradually depopulated and lost its importance economic and strategic. Also late third century (270-280 AD), the city and a small country house in the area of \u200b\u200bthe house were destroyed, perhaps by an earthquake.
In the fourth century AD life goes on in that area, but never rebuilt the city that was in the first two centuries of the empire, the town became essentially gas station, so that between 320 and 330 AD, was made a new thermal plant (the one visible today) on the previous age of Augustus and a different orientation. The great city was reduced to a small town, and where there was a small house is built palatial home of the dominus, the famous Villa Romana del Casale.
of the bath remains almost completely intact and clearly legible structure fourth century, which has two entrances, a large lobby, the apoditherium with two pools for the bath, the steam bath, tepidarium, small rooms and frigidarium passing
Around 365 AD an earthquake, recorded at different sites in Sicily, destroyed the country that was almost completely abandoned
At the end of IV - beginning of the fifth century spa facility underwent a Sofiana profound transformation, linked to a resumption of production. He realized the furnaces, and perhaps later even a church with two apses on the environment of the spa. This resurgence of the old settlement lasted until the mid-eighth century, when the Arab conquest marks the final decline, though some walls and some findings suggest a attendance at least until age Frederick and over (among other things, documented by coins of Frederick William II and II).
The spa area has returned a large quantity of finds ceramic facies Castelluccio (Early Bronze Age), the Greek period, but especially the Roman and Byzantine, Arab and Norman. These are mainly oil lamps, incense burners, jugs, vases, plates, rings and pendants in silver and bronze, bronze buckles, bone needles. Among the ceramic materials prevails African red.
In a room adjacent to the spa area was also found a "treasure" of 300 bronze coins minted in between the age of Hadrian and one of Constantius (117 - 361). It seems that the owner, he had kept this little treasure, it has not been able to recover more after an earthquake in 365 AD bronze coins are quite worn, small size and weight, now preserved at the Museum of Gela .
Philosophiana is the neutral plural noun, like other names mentioned stationes Itinerarium Antonini, defining property of a character, perhaps, for the kind of life he led and for his interests, was called "the philosopher "and was the owner of the Villa del Casale.

rises to slopes of the mountain range Nebrodi owes its present location and planning the genius of the Duke of Camastra, who in 1683 obtained permission from the viceroy of Sicily's license rebuilding of the site after a geological cataclysm had completely destroyed and razed to the ground the old farmhouse.
Of great interest is the urban plan of the historic center: a diamond placed in a square.
The internal structures of the village were made after the country's reconstruction (1683 et seq.)
A small church, an ancient cemetery, an avenue of palms proud, fragments of an ancient history, little things that they want to be an indelible heritage. A

Caltagirone, surely one of the most beautiful of southeast Sicily, is a city vital during a trip to Sicily, both for its baroque architecture and for its ceramics, famous throughout Italy! Archaeological evidence of prehistoric period, attest to the presence of a settlement in the ancient bronze age.
Hellenized between the seventh and sixth centuries. BC continued to live under the domination Roman, Byzantine and Arabic, during which he assumed the current name indicates its nature as a "fortress jars" for its production of ceramics.
In 1090 it surrendered to the Count Roger the Norman began his gratitude for that long series of concessions and feudal privileges that made it rich and prosperous during the Middle Ages until the seventeenth century.
Magnificent prestige and opulence, was devastated by an earthquake in 1693, but resources arousing the admiration of the traveler 700 and 800 for its stylish aristocracy. In
900 remained important and unique city, significant laboratory of interesting experiences I would point out national policies.
Situated on a 'hill-pad Ereo ibleo to domain of the large and fertile plains of Gela and Catania, Caltagirone offers an image of opulence and dignity intact architecture and urban, rich in monuments and palaces that recall the ancient glories.
are the heart of the historic Town Hall Square and Umberto I, already "Della Loggia" and "Malfitana" which depart from the magnificent Scala di Santa Maria del Monte, Via Luigi Sturzo, Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Roma, dating from the Renaissance to the system.
From March to September, laCittà offers significant events characterized by the components of culture, history, art and religion.
Easter, with a performance of "Passion" and "Government" that attracts the attention of tourists and the choir citizen participation.
In May, the Scala di Santa Maria del Monte is covered with a colorful tapestry of plants and flowers in honor of Our Lady of Condominiums and becomes the stage for the international fashion show "Pottery, flowers and fashion."
In July, in honor of St. James, patron saint of the city, the same lights,
according to a centuries-old tradition, hundreds of oil lamps, colored form each year a different design flaming.
Finally, during the Christmas season, becoming the city of Caltagirone cribs with dozens of exhibitions of artifacts, works of their famous potters. Caltagirone
fact preserves its heritage of craftsmanship and experience the historical memory of its secular tradition through the establishment of the School of the Museum of Ceramics, who have defended and revived the Ceramic Calatina still genuinely and exclusively linked to the manual skills of artisans and creative spirit, back to being the largest and most qualified production sector of Caltagirone that it still can be called "City of Ceramics".

Sn Manual Mount Blade
The white limestone outcrops in the vegetation and makes the landscape edge, "hard" breathtaking.
Moving from one location to another between the highlands iblei, you often see in the distance the rock walls of caves such as hives pitted stone, and just want to say out loud: "Look at that! But what are they? "The cave tombs of the Bronze Age are among the most striking archaeological evidence that the projected visitor in the early history, in an atmosphere that few other places in Italy you can find.
The ancient tradition of living in a cave and bury is linked to both the geology of this area is the need to defend themselves from the attacks of wild animals and attacks from enemies. The natural and artificial caves were inhabited and reused over millennia to modern times and contemporary with different aims, through hard work digging and adaptation. Many
rock sites, especially those underground, during the greek-roman were used for religious practices, in particular the worship of water and springs. After the fall
Roman Empire, to return to live in caves , new settlements are built, widened and re-adjust the existing ones were built of real rock clusters that will be named later in the Arab period cottages and take the name of families that lived. Many of these houses retain their names in the Arabic etymological, a sign that they were inhabited by entire families for long periods. The town-house or by Mendola Mende (a few kilometers from the Palazzolo) was called Rahalbaranis; Rahalbalata Ddieri of the Bauly etc. The cave dwelling
was not only a prerogative of the people affected by natural disasters, from the consequences of foreign occupation or by war, soon to them s'affianca monks who sought the 'isolation. Many of these were of Eastern origin, with rules established several monasteries and hermitages or community life, leading a solitary existence in caves and setting up places of worship, often adapting rocky environments-including tombs and water wells. They dug huge monastic complex is also significant in size (see St. Peter Buscemi, San Marco, Saint Lucia di Mendola etc.), Often destroying the catacombs of early Christian period before. The rock churches were painted with images of everyday life, of saints, the Madonna and Christ. Around these monastic centers, developed a remarkable religious activity that attracted the faithful from the surrounding villages. The monasteries thus became a point of reference for the population, whether for food, cultural, religious and defense policy. With
Frederick II of Swabia, and the subsequent period of partial peace and quiet, almost the entire population of the city back to life, surely thanks to the work of construction and reconstruction built by Frederick II. It was a rebirth of intellect and genius, a reference to the betterment of all human activities
The cliff dwellings were gradually abandoned, as the hill towns isolated and difficult to reach. They were only men and nearby few households engaged in farming and sheep farming, which continued to live in a cave until the modern age, in some countries of Syracuse and Ragusa until 1950.
Then, different reasons led to the closure of monasteries, monastic orders, and many moved to cities and neighboring countries in the reconstruction phase, lost in the mountains of Iblei. The decline in vocations to the monastic life lasts also led to the closure of the hermitages. Abandonment, and soon all was the human carelessness combined with the weather, caused the death of rock sites, some of which today only in place names.
In the 50s the agrarian reform After the war caused the end of a civilization unique in Italy lasted over 5,000 years: living in the cave. Disappear, swallowed up by ignorance and lack of protection of human institutions: villages, troughs, water tanks, watch towers, monuments, houses. The most inexorable fate suffered by the churches scattered among the mountains Iblei in Siracusa and Ragusa churches and catacombs are used as stables or incorporated within the farms and used for storage of household goods. It is destroying the frescoes on the walls, altars dismantled and reused as fill stones. Anonymous peasants, have become owners with land reform, for the most part unaware of the havoc they were making, they destroy everything and become the "sacred stones" in dry stone walls in order to delimit their properties
Despite the numerous and permanent loss of this heritage, yet nothing is lost altogether, because they are yet many sites you can visit and maintain, it would suffice to mention one for all the wonderful necropolis of Pantalica !

What To Wear During Initiation Sorority
One of them is the testimonies of Trabacche catacomb, which is located about 10 km from the center of Dubrovnik, on a natural ridge in the valley of Buttino, Contrada Cento Pozzi, cleaned and reopened to the public in 2007 and now open to visitors on request and guidance (Writer, Clare of Zuleima, is a guide of the catacomb). Of these settlements, we must imagine that dot the countryside of Ragusa even when the Arab conquest (eighth century AD), have been preserved only the necropolis: tombs, catacombs, and was sub-star. The catacomb of Trabacche was already known in the eighteenth century, is a drawing of the famous French traveler Jean Houel, which portrays the interior in his work Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile, de Malte et de Lipari (Paris, 1787, Table CCVIII).
As you enter you can not fail to notice the two monumental tombs cut into the rocks at the center of two burial chambers that make up the catacomb. In an old tents local dialect means "canopy", "tent" and in fact the two monumental tombs were built with a roof canopy pillars connected by arches cut into the rock!
We suggest you come to see it: it's worth it!

Can I Fly With Fibulation
Palazzolo is now a town of nearly 10,000 inhabitants, situated about 40 km from Ragusa Ibla, but was born in the sixth century BC as sub-colony of the Greek colony of Syracuse , certainly not a random choice by Greek colonists from the top that controlled all the movements on the surrounding area, at 360 degrees on the valley dell'Anapo and Tellaro .
The road from Ragusa Ibla that door up there is very nice, especially because the landscape is not disfigured with buildings, the modern work, has been preserved as it was the beginning of the twentieth century: there is still the oak, for example!
a place little known even by the Sicilians, and we want to recommend.
Among the remains of ' greek settlement opens a theater, a jewel who lives at certain times of the year. Also the historic center of the modern city has its own peculiarities, such as House Museum of A. Bird. Who was Anthony Bird? A man born in Bath, who left his country to go to teach in Brianza (some things never change, right!?) And its by far decided not to let go of what that time would slip away from generation generation. A poet, a scholar with the spirit of research and anthropologist. When he came "from up" during the school holidays, left with his wife around Sicily, country and country he left .... for the preservation of folk songs, but returned with all the cultural and material as well. All this hard work was put inside the bird house that bought in Palazzolo, the home-front today you can visit for free.
Please read "The house of Icarus" by A. Bird.
The rest you will see and savor the only way here.
